The Power of Systems

If you’ve ever heard me speak, you know I am a big fan of Michael Gerber, author of The E-Myth. His book was my roadmap to creating systems in my restaurant twenty years ago to free myself from the burden of “babysitting” my restaurant.

Gerber’s famous line is to work “ON” your business, not “IN” it.

To do so requires systems for every aspect of your restaurant.

For some strange reason, I am getting overloaded with requests from clients to help them create kitchen production reports (see example below) in our catering software, Restaurant Catering Systems.

As a restaurant owner’s catering business gets busier, they are faced with a very important challenge. They must have a system to keep up with what the kitchen must produce for an order, what must be in inventory and the deadline.

In the beginning you may only have one or two orders a day. That doesn’t take much time to calculate your production requirements. What happens as orders grow for the day?

That’s when it’s important to have your reports spit out automatically.

I just emailed my lead tech about having the report pop up on an iPad or tablet. Imagine the tablet is mounted in your prep station and your prep person has a real time display of what to produce.

Even if a last minute order came in, their report would update.

Is that something that would make your life easier? Please, let me know.

Any system that can free you up to sell more catering or decrease costs is a system worth having.

While you ponder, and hopefully write me back about systems, I will be leaving for Las Vegas in the morning. I always check out new restaurants for ideas to share with you.

I’ll be doing double duty and participating in a bachelorette party for one of my good friends Rhonda. She’s the only woman in our poker group. So it’s her and six poker guys seeing if we can win more than we lose at the tables.

There will be embarrassing pics for me to share next week, yet plenty of stories…again…not to be shared via this blog.

Well That’s All For This Issue!
